Lawley celebrates the King's coronation in style

Posted on: 12 May 23

On Sunday 7 May, Lawley and other local communities came together to celebrate the coronation of King Charles III.

For the first time Lawley Partnership Board organised a Coronation Carnival, which started with a parade and Telford Concert band playing. Then there was an afternoon of fun, while everyone enjoyed their picnics and free ice cream! As well as a variety of stalls, Indian food and Lawley Primary School PTFA providing refreshments, the kids (big and small) had a great time with the traditional funfair games, face painting, inflatables and crafts. We were delighted to welcome the Mayor of the Borough of Telford and Wrekin, Cllr Raj Mehta and it was great to see Mawley the Lawley mole make an appearance too.

And of course, who could forget the two cake competitions, the judges soon regretted their decision of volunteering as the entries were fantastic and all tasted delicious. A huge thank you goes to everyone who took part and congratulations to the winners, who were Amelia for her crown design and Gosla who created ‘god save the king’.

These events require a great deal of organisation and support and without the following we wouldn’t have been able to put the carnival on. So, on behalf of everyone at Lawley Partnership Board, we would like to say thanks for the following:

Thank you to the following who provided funding to enable the event to take place:

Telford & Wrekin Council Kings Coronation grant
Lawley Partnership Board
Lawley and Overdale Parish Council
Bournville Village Trust, Eileen Hewer Fund
Persimmon Homes

A huge thank you to Lawley Primary School who kindly enabled us to hold the event on their fields and also to the members of their PTFA who ran the refreshments stall. With the weather so hot, the drinks were needed!

There are certainly some talented artists and bakers in Lawley, a huge thank you to everyone who entered either the design a cake competition or Lawley bake-off. The winning design a cake competition was four year old Billy Joe Lee and his winning creation came to life thanks to Kevin and Ria who made the cake. The winners of the Lawley bake-off were Amelia who won the children’s category and Gosia who won the adult category.

We’ll be able to look back on the coronation for many years to come, thanks to artist Daisy Atkins who created a living willow crown, which is in Lawley Community Garden. It provides a great place to sit and reflect.

It’s not often we have an event now without Mawley coming to take a look, he had a brilliant time and has asked to pass on his thanks to Jordan and those who helped him, so he didn’t trip up as he can be a little clumsy!

It was the first time a parade has been organised by Lawley Partnership Board and we’d like to say a huge thank you to Sarah from Wild at Art Centre for her support with the banner design inspirations for the parade and for taking part, it was a lovely way to begin the event.
