Caroline Cadbury, Chair of the Trustees of Bournville Village Trust (BVT), recently visited Lawley Youth Club to see how funding from the Eileen Hewer Community Fund is helping expand opportunities for local young people.

The grant, worth more than £1,000, enabled the youth club to purchase new football, golf and tennis equipment, providing members with even more opportunities to take part in sports and social activities.

Run by 4 All Foundation, Lawley Youth Club takes place every Friday at Lawley Community Centre and is open to young people aged 10 to 16. The group is preparing to celebrate its first anniversary and has become a valued space for young people to socialise, build confidence and try new activities.

The club offers a wide range of activities including sports, arts and crafts, pool and darts, creating a safe and welcoming environment for local young people.

Gemma Hargreaves from 4 All Foundation said:

“The youth club provides a safe and fun place for young people to attend. They can take part in a range of activities from sports to arts and crafts, as well as pool and darts. We are extremely grateful to Bournville Village Trust and the Eileen Hewer Community Fund for the grant, which has provided much-needed equipment.”

The Eileen Hewer Community Fund, managed by Bournville Village Trust, awards grants to groups and organisations working to benefit the Lawley community and its residents.

Following her visit, Caroline Cadbury said:

“It was fantastic to see first-hand the difference these grants are making to the local community. Speaking to the young people and seeing them enjoy the sports equipment bought through the grant was fantastic.”

Young people attending the club have also spoken positively about the impact the group has had on their confidence and wellbeing.

Freya, who attends Lawley Youth Club, said:

“Before I came to the group I used to be nervous in new situations, but attending the group has really helped. I think it is a really good way for kids to chill and make new friends.”

Grants of up to £2,000 per year are available through the Eileen Hewer Community Fund. Funding can support community activities and projects, equipment for local groups, organisational or running costs, environmental improvements, facilities for residents and contributions to charitable causes that benefit Lawley.

Applications can be made throughout the year and are reviewed by the resident-led Lawley Management Committee.
